Many of us feel a deep hunger that is hard to identify, so it is hard to fulfill. It isn’t a craving for food or love or personal fulfillment, and yet it feels a bit like each of them. There is a feeling of incompleteness about ourselves, along with a sense of lostness. It is as though there is some basic guidance or companionship that is missing from our lives.
It keeps gnawing at us no matter what we do to try to satiate it. We can deny it and suppress it, but it never goes away for long. It is as though we are perpetually dissatisfied. We want more, and we want it bigger, stronger, louder — anything that will quiet the yearning. Anything to fill the void.
Like hunger for food, this yearning is part of being Human. And like hunger for food, it is felt only when it is not satisfied. Because so many Civilized People experience it, it has become a chronic part of the Civilized Human condition.
When we first became Human, this hunger saddened our Caring Mother. In Her compassion she has given us a most profound and beautiful Blessing — a special relationship with the Animal, Plant, Sky, and Elemental People. Without this relationship we are plagued with continual inner turmoil; with it we can have serenity. Without it we destroy that which feeds us; with it we yearn to cherish all life as we do our own. Without it we grow bitter and reclusive; with it we lust to join in the sweet Dance of Life.
