Excerpt...
Our pre-human ancestors had evolved their long distance running ability around 2 million years ago, probably to chase down large animals. They had already been eating meat for a half million years, to provide a concentrated energy source for their growing brains and constantly-moving lifestyle. Their meat was probably gained by scavenging, as they lacked the claws, fangs, strength, and speed to do their own hunting. Nor did they have hunting weapons...With their newfound running ability, they could chase an animal until he was exhausted, at which point he would either collapse or be easily killed by clubbing or stoning…Had our distant human ancestors not evolved their running ability, they would likely not have been able to continue on the evolutionary track that produced modern humans. Their population would have remained low and they would not have had the nutritional basis to support ever-enlarging brains.
