From Tamarack Song:
"In my 20 years as an instructor and director here at the Teaching Drum, I've worked with hundreds of women and men who were losing their grip on reality -- and sometimes even on life itself. Whether struggling with social problems, addictions, or suicidal notions, virtually all of them held two things in common: they didn't know who they were and they didn't know why they were here.
"When these questions are answered, life starts to fall into place. There is no longer a reason to be depressed and seek escape, and what were once considered liabilities, such as personality disorders and ADD, can often be seen in a different light -- as gifts that just need the right format to be expressed.
"What we do here is offer people the opportunity to get to know their deeper selves by providing them with a supportive environment that is free of all the distractions, escapes, triggers, and judgments that keep them in reactive mode. Here they can be enactive, learning about healthy relationship -- first with themselves, and then with a small group of people who learn to trust in each other to have their physical and social needs met. This is where the true self begins to emerge and illusions and misconceptions begin to melt away."
The community at the Teaching Drum Outdoor School is returning to the ways of balance and respect practiced by our tribal ancestors and native people everywhere. This process involves healing the unconscious, dysfunctional patterns inherited from our culture, and here is our three-step approach:
1. Become aware of our patterns.
2. Discover and heal their source.
3. Establish a healthy, new way of being.
Our dysfunctional patterns usually manifests either as addictions and coping mechanisms, or as victimization-enabling (codependency) relationship behaviors. For examples of healthy relationship, we look to our ancestral ways of relating to each other: circle consciousness and living our truths. Following are the main concepts of natural human relationship- Circle Consciousness, Truthspeaking and listening, and the Talking Circle.
